Description:
Set in Nazi-occupied France, the novel follows very different sisters Vianne and Isabelle. Vianne, a cautious mother in a small village, is forced to house German officers and find ways to protect her daughter and hidden Jewish children as the occupation tightens. Isabelle, rebellious and fearless, joins the French Resistance and becomes the infamous courier known as the Nightingale, guiding downed Allied pilots over the Pyrenees. Told through a dual timeline with an elderly narrator looking back on the war, the story explores sacrifice, courage, and the often overlooked “women’s war.”
